Project
Please tell us an overview of "Ikasa."
"Ikasa" is Japan's first full-scale umbrella sharing service, launched with the missions of "making rainy days comfortable and happy" and "eliminating disposable umbrellas." Instead of buying a plastic umbrella every time you get caught in a sudden rain shower, you can use a dedicated app to borrow a durable "Ikasa" at a station or in town, and return it to the nearest umbrella spot when the rain stops. This service helps you live a rich life with limited resources, reduce the wasteful consumption of plastic umbrellas, and reduce CO2 emissions (reducing approximately 692g of CO2 with each use of Ikasa*).
The "2030 Zero Disposable Umbrellas Project" was launched in 2022 with the aim of "eliminating disposable umbrellas by 2030 through umbrella sharing and making it a normal part of the culture not to use disposable umbrellas."
Please tell us how you came to start sponsoring the "2030 Zero Disposable Umbrellas Project."
Under Environmental Policy, MIRARTH HOLDINGS Group is working to "Promotion of resource recycling." We felt that this service could contribute to our group's goal of "creating a sustainable, earth-friendly environment." Not only does it help reduce CO2 emissions by reducing umbrella waste, but it is also a service that enriches people's lives by helping them deal with sudden rain and reducing the amount of luggage they need to carry, which was very appealing to us, and we decided to sponsor the project. We believe that by participating in this project, we can demonstrate to both inside and outside the company our determination to evolve into “future environment design company”
Were there any points you paid particular attention to?
Supporting the service through sponsorship will not only help expand the service itself, but by rolling out our original umbrellas and setting up umbrella spots in more familiar locations such as our head office and group companies, we hope to help employees feel closer to sustainability and make it their own. We are issuing free coupons so that employees and business partners can make active use of them, and we hope that they will experience a life that is convenient, comfortable, and eco-friendly even on rainy days. We hope that this initiative will spread the actions of each and every employee that "make the future of people and the earth happy." (RI)
When considering our original umbrella, we reconsidered many times, aiming for a design that would appeal to many people. We adopted a design in which a rainbow, which is a symbol of an element of our MIRARTH logo, appears when it gets wet in the rain, allowing people to see the rainbow even in the rain. Initially, we considered dark colors such as navy or black so that men would be able to easily pick it up and the rainbow would stand out, but because it would be difficult for drivers to see it in dark times such as at night and it would be dangerous, we also considered safety and arrived at the current gray-based design. Points
What did you do to create empathy within the company?
I think it was a good thing that they actively promoted the idea within the company. "On my way home, it started to rain so I bought an umbrella at the convenience store. Before I knew it, I had a bunch of plastic umbrellas at home!" I'm sure many of us have had similar experiences. Because this is an initiative that is close to home and easy to empathize with, I think it's also important that it is a service that can serve as an opportunity to think about resource circulation initiatives.
When Aikasa was first installed at each group company, the monthly usage was in the single digits, but now it is being used more than 100 times, and I feel that it is gradually taking root within the company.
What results have you achieved through this sponsorship?
By expanding the service itself through this sponsorship, we believe we are able to reduce umbrella waste in Japan and contribute to creating a sustainable, earth-friendly environment. In addition, this was a time when our company set a target for reducing CO2 emissions, so we believe that this has led to a change in awareness of abandoned umbrellas within the company, which in turn has led to a change in awareness of environmental issues such as resource circulation and climate change, and has promoted efforts to address these issues.
"To design sustainable environments for a happier future for both people and our planet." What does this mean?
It is to "use our imagination in a Sustainability society and do work that leads to the happiness of the people in front of us and consideration for the environment." I believe that each and every one of our employees, in their respective roles, is conscious of a sustainable society and works with the future in mind, which will lead to the sustainable growth of the MIRARTH HOLDINGS Group. As in the case of the 2030 Zero Disposable Umbrella Project, we aim to contribute to solving environmental and social issues by exploring and participating in sponsored projects that lead to the promotion of sustainability activities. In addition, together with the Sustainability Promotion Division, we will absorb sustainability activities within the Group and disseminate them both inside and outside the company with the aim of promoting these activities.
